Oral Skills- Narratives

Something else we did with my 3rd ESO classes that was a lot of fun was to read "Revolting Rhymes" but Roald Dahl. These are stories that are classics but have some twists to them. I had them answer these questions after they read in groups:

In your own group:
Story 1 (your group´s):
Questions: (make sure you have good answers so you can share with your classmates later! You ALL have to write them down on your own paper!)

  1. Plot: how is what happens in the story the same or different from what the original has?
  1. Characters: are the characters the same? How are they the same or different?
  1. Tone: is the feeling of the words and what the story gives you the same? How is it different?
  1. Does the rhyming scheme help or detract from the story in your opinion?
  1. Were there any vocabulary words that your classmates may not know that you should explain?

Then, one student from each group came together to make a new group. The representative from the original story told it to the rest of the group who hadn't read the same story, and they had to answer these questions:
In your second group:
(the other stories that you are hearing about)
Question for all the other stories: What are the main similarities/differences between the original and Dahl´s version (think about plot, characters, tone)?

 This helped the students practice narrative speaking and using phrases like "once upon a time" among others.

Oral Skills- Debating

Throughout my time at Laguna de Joatzel a favorite thing I have done with students (and I think they enjoy it too) is to do some debates. These are great because you can pick any topic that the students believe in and that is relevant and it can last a couple of classes. Here is the outline that I have followed. Personal Information Hi, I'm Anna! I am from the United States, Georgia to be exact. I grew up there my entire life and then after graduating from college I wanted to live abroad and gain a new experience in another country. I have taken Spanish for 11 years and love the language and Spanish-speaking countries, so the Auxiliares program was a perfect way to be able to come live here. Oral Skills- Talking about Personality

There are many activities in which you can talk about personality. Students are generally interested in psychology, so they tended to enjoy these activities. For example, I read aloud a couple of quizzes that the students answered the questions for, without knowing what they meant. I made them a worksheet to keep track. Then, after,  I read them the interpretations of what they had wrote. We went through each one and then I had some people share with the class what their interpretation was. They also worked in groups to talk about how they were similar and different in personality.
